Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Break down/picture of hand pump

Cool not buying a filter and cleaning the existing one will save me $ and time as I can't get it local I'd have to order it...been online all morning looking.

I know. I know. We're *almost* there.  The thing that's pushing Kevin now is that it was running perfect and he's just down right po'd at it now.  He says no way will it win. :)

Patience...over rated.

You don't need to replace the in-tank filter.  It can be removed and cleaned with gasoline or mineral spirits.

If the earlier engine had "gunk" in the filter, then you can be pretty sure it's in the tank.  I can envision black slime sticking to the sides of the tank, getting loosened up when you pumped in new fuel, and now it's clogging the in-tank filter/strainer.  The symptoms as you describe them are textbook....

Pulling the tank, shaking it with gasoline and a length of chain inside (to loosen up whatever crude, including rust, is on the sides and top), then rinsing it out and letting it sit in the sun for a day or two would surely go a long way to solve tank contamination.

That and make sure all the fuel lines are tight.  Oh, and patience.  Don't forget that.  I know that, after all the time and money you've put into this, it's frustrating to have the car just not run.  But now you're almost there, so don't give up!  You've already done the hard part (swapping the engine).

NOW he tells me what he really wanted was a break down of the thing the hand pump attaches to.  Geez.

I told him to check the vent line to make sure he didn't blow it off.

Air filter is new.

Clear filter is still clear...for now.  The old one on the other motor had gunk in it.  I'm checking locally for the in tank filter.  I know the tank has crud in it.  Kevin put the Star Tron tank cleaner in on Tues.  I think he's contemplating pulling the tank.  That would cure one problem.  Oh I think way back when I started this adventure someone told me to go get a length of fuel line...that would be something to pick up today if I can find it local.  Wouldn't hurt to change them all.

The newer black hand pumps work fine, and it doesn't take to much effort
to fill a fuel filter, just leave if the filter a little loose and watch
the little escaping bubbles turn to diesel, then it's full. After
starting there's still an air bubble in the line that will hit the
injectors a little while after you start it, so you'll have to give it a
bit more fuel, and be ready to give even more when it stumbles. After
that, the bubble should be gone, unless there's an air leak somewhere. I
like to change the fuel filter after the car is warmed up, so there's an
easy start and less issues with it stalling when the air bubble hits.

Once there's air in the injector lines, you have to loosen them, one at
a time, and crank the engine to bleed them of air.

How's the air filter?

Another thing is slime clogged filters and the tank screen. If your
primary filter has black chunks in it, you may have a clogged screen too.
