Tony,
The good news - my 79 300CD came with a bumper mounted hitch.
The bad news - on a trip, it started breaking loose.
The good news - The SC welcome center ladies knew where to send me and I got a substantial one welded up and bolted on.
The bumper is aluminum and the bolts will tear out if you bolt to it. The bumpers are mounted on shock absorbing elements. If you are mounting a bicycle carrier, you might get away with it. If you are towing a trailer, make a hitch that bolts to the body, not the bumper. If you bolt to the bumper, use a large backing plate (and it will keep the bumper shock absorber feature from working).

Saw a nice small receiver mounted on a VW bug which I can get copied for about $100 USD. Can any one tell me if it is sufficient to bolt it up to the bumper? I was amazed at how thick the bumper is, the bumper will take the weight no problem, but is the bumper connected well enough to the car?
We have a small enclosed trailer I would like to haul occasionally max weight 1000 lbs.
Thanks for any input.
Tony.
