With all due respect Nate, I can tell you my turbo was leaking oil, loaded with carbon and that cannot be good for it in any manner.  The small amount of money spent on the rebuild kit is well worth it for me.  Others, maybe not.  Of course we all march to a different drummer.  I like preventative maintenance.

Kent likes to sell parts.A turbo should last 3 engines.You need boost gauge,as mine only had 6 psi.Now 16 psi.

Hey this is a cool topic and very timely for me! A few quick questions:

(Mine is 1984 300 SD Turbo - 275k mi)

1). Are there any easy/obvious "tests" to tell if my turbo is working or not working? (i.e. no turbo whine to speak of, no boost gauge)

2). How hard is it to remove/replace the turbo with engine in car?

3). What do you estimate parts cost and total repair time to be?
