Good on you for riding the rails Bud ! .
As a youth I rode them every where in Boston, far worse than anything I've ever encountered here but still cheap and handy .
All they needs do is CARE ENOUGH to clean it as necessary.....
I'd ride ot to see my Sweet if there was a stop anywhere near me, she's only a mile from one stop right now, soon to be further away though .

Had a meeting withe metro last year, everyone that worked for metro drove to work and thought my traveling by rail was a novel idea.
