IMHO, being old and lazy, changing the boots alone on these axles, while possible is a PITA, its easier to end up with an axle with rebuilt parts and a new boot.  The work required under the car is the same.  Bite the bullet and do both sides.

Mercedes, do these joints go bad from wear or is it that they die as
most of them do from neglecting to keep good boots? And, are they so
difficult to work on that even if the joints are good, it would be more
economical to just get rebuilts?
