This is indicative of a stretched timing change. Betcha anything the camshaft is at LEAST 5-degrees retarded. There's still more power to found in that 2.4-litre diesel....

I found the problem, but only by accident. When I disconnected the vacuum line going to the stop valve, the pump make a clack and the fuel stopped right up. Set time with no further issues. No more smoke, climbs hills well, gas pedal is way off the floor when cruising now. Had to bend the pipes quite a bit to get them back on, so obviously moved it quite a bit. It was almost to the limit of motion pulled away from the engine and now its about midway. I'll bet it was 10 deg off.
