Re: [diesel_mercedes] Paint Matching

Doing some repaint work on a maroon 300Sd that had obviously been repainted, but didn't show any obvious fading.  The fact that the clear coat was failing in spots was the main indication of a repaint.  I took the gas lid to a paint store for computer matching since I was going to do the painting.  The scan comes with a confidence level of the match. The clerk said that 1 was best and that we were at 11, did we want to mix the paint.  I figured that short of taking it some place to have it painted, I had little choice.  I figured I could blend the paint out over adjacent panels if the color was really off.  Luckily it is off only a shade and not noticeable except under minute  examination.

Well ;

Therein lies the rub Brian ~

Some shops use a computerized laser thing that looks at the old paint and tells them *exactly* how to mix it .

Better shops have a guy who'll look at your paint and match it better .

Never, EVER tell them what the year and brand of vehicle is ! .. the last time some boob waited until I left the body shop then called Thompson Lacquer and told them 'you know, it's that old green 1968  VW Beetle Nate drives" and that was that ~ yes it was the beautiful Forest Green but it was also an Earl Schieb repaint that had WAYYY too much yellow in it as do most green paints so after that I had one fender & 1/3 panel plus a deck lid that didn't *quite* match because they mixed it to the original 1968 VW color instead of the carefully polished then waxed ash tray face I'd personally handed the paint matching guy.....

Sigh .

Yes, they mixed "in house" using factory specs. Apparently a good shop can mix anything to match factory paint.
