After adding a half-quart of motor oil to the fuel, I drove my '77 240D
down to less than 1/2 tank. I topped her off, bringing the gasoline
ratio down to less than 15%. Enduring the better part of two weeks of
hard starts, smoking and chugging up inclines, she seems none the worse
for the wear. I will be replacing the fuel filters anon.
Back to normal life!
Improvements this month have been the installation of a speedo I bought
off Ebay. I tried my hand at repairing the odometer and that was a
success. The bad news is that it seems innacurate-reading slow-and the
needle is faded to a beige. Note to self: just because it has the same
numbers, does not make them identical. I also procured one of those dash
light rheostats from an Ebay fellow in Latvia. That was a resounding
success. The one he sent me looked really clean, but I did slip a tiny
dab of white grease into the hole in the side to lube the coil.
This will hold until I get around to doing the AC evaporator. That will
be a dash out job. I will then refurb the original speedo.
