A counter clockwise turn on the screw moves the
diaphragm up (just like extra air pressure would) and causes it to
provide more fuel to the engine.  Conversely, a clockwise turn on the
adj. screw, forces the diaphragm down and it provides less fuel to the
engine.

This ALDA thing is there because these cars are mechanically
fuel-injected, not electronically injected...  There's no computer
(with its requisite air pressure and temp sensors and O2 sensors) to
regulate the fuel flow for the best air-to-fuel ratio, so there has
to be a mechanical way of "measuring" the air in the intake
manifold.  The ALDA is what does that.  Whether its actually called
an ALDA or not on the non-turbo models is beside the point....
