Mine turned out to be the "guide rod joints", an actual ball joint on the trailing arm.

Wow ~There's a bad knock coming from the front end of my 1982 240D so I ordered in the upper control arm and bushings, tie rods, kits, so on and so forth.....I hope a ball joint doesn't part on me as my coupe is still in for a major front suspension rebuild and AC repair.....-Nate
