As it turned out, the shop that rebuilt my 300CD's engine mis timed the IP, a bit late, I hope that didn't damage anything, as I said it runs out very sweetly now but I'm still fooling with it .

I plan to take it on a one day road rally this Sunday, see how she goes .'

You should also check the cam timing, even on a freshly rebuilt engine.  Doing it by the lines on the cam to the cam tower verses the crankshaft pulley to the pointer is a good start, but much, much better is to actually "degree" the camshaft.  For those unfamiliar with the procedure:

It's almost a guarantee that any engine with a timing chain and over 50,000 miles on it will have retarded camshaft timing.

I ca, it's not terribly difficult, I made my self a timing drip tube and did it on this car before when I installed the 1985 300SD's injection pump from a nice car that was rear ended .

The 240D's fuel economy stinks too, it's only 24 ~ 25 MPG's after I bankrupted my self rebuilding the engine and tranny .
