When you bring home a 25 plus year old Benz there will always be some surprises, even for the ones in really nice condition. Sometimes those surprises are not so good. ( like finding the transmission shaft seals are leaking ). Other surprises can be very positive. I remember the time I found some valuable jewelry in the trunk of a W123 that would not open. :-) Well, this last blue 300D I drove home really gave me a surprise this last week when I pulled it into the shop to do a full physical exam on the engine. If you have not done so already, first watch the video on what I found when I opened up the air filter housing. Then watch the three part series on the results from the engine health exam.
I was really surprised at the results and you will understand why I am a "happy camper" or very happy diesel owner. Now I can confidently proceed with all the other work that needs to be done on the car - remember it does not have to be work. Doing a reasonable "rolling chassis" restoration can be quite therapeutic. You know how I feel about detailing. For me it is on with removing the ugly pinstriping, buffing and waxing the paint, and painting the alloy wheels. :-)
