I will Guess it is something in the shifting linkage; that covers a lot of area. Start underneath at the transmission and follow the linkages back to the firewall.
Also look in your driveway for washers or a piece of cotter pin (small though).

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] sudden tranny failure
Guys:
I pulled into my driveway at about 5:00/pm today and all was well. Car worked as usual all day. At 9:00\pm I got in to go to the store and it simply would not shift into second. It would shift out of first - but not into Second. or any other gear. Thinking back, I may have heard a snap or pop as I pulled into the driveway, but I am not sure. I know this is not a lot of info. But any observations are appreciated. I will check vacuum and shift cables tomorrow in the daylight. I will probably pull the pan and replace the filter screen as well. Could it be a piston? I hate to lose this wonderful old beast after so many years of such reliable service. Of course I can probably find another tranny. And I will if I have to. I love this old lady. But any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Bogy.
