RE: [diesel_mercedes] off topic, a little bit

This is a good read, especially if you're in a pensive or life change mode.

Last 10 pages focus on Gumption Traps.

Max – the VW manual was perfect.  Also enjoyed this one;

did not have a street bike,  preferred MX bikes, especially

the Spainish ones.  My fave was Montesa.

I never heard of him. But nowdays its much easier to learn stuff. Best two books I ever had in my whole life(except of course the bible) were "The VW and Subaru Idiots Manual", I learned everything from them. Loved the stories of Wilbur Kleenex and the Muldoon guy out in the New Mexico or Arizona desert somewheres. Now there is youtube,  and some of those guys are pretty good, and of course digital cameras to take pictures to remind you of what it looked like before you took it apart. We did not have those, I know Nate remembers the old days.  Heading back home after 4 weeks of tripping around the south land. Max

Well, we had the wrong pickle fork. They gave us the one for a tie rod but when we compared they looked exactly the same and it was not working for the ball joint. I bet there is a impact tool with a pickle type head to hammer them loose. Max

On Wheeler Dealers Edd China would put a heavy hammer against one side of the 'joint' and hit the other side with another hammer.

I've always used a pickle fork and not had a problem. Bill in Oregon

This is not really too far off topic, it is a question about cars. One of my boys and I just replaced ball joints on the 2006 Subaru. I've done this twice now and these things are really hard to break loose.  Both times I ended up using a steel firewood splitting wedge and a very big hammer  because nothing else we had worked. We even had a borrowed pickle fork , a very large pry bar. So while we were breaking these things loose I am always wondering what the real guys use for this job. These were in the car for 161K and did not want to come out. Whats  anyone else do for this job? Max
