[diesel_mercedes] Wiper relay and why is there oil behind the gauges

 

Hi,

I just replaced the W123 Windshield Wiper Relay, which is up behind the
gauge assembly, and just so you know, it can be replaced w/o removing
the gauges. I needed to do this because the intermittent function
stopped working on the wipers, and we seem to have rain this year.

is way up top, against the dash:

While I was doing this, I noticed a bunch of black motor oil coming from
behind the gauges. What is that from, the oil gauge? easy fix? I have a
second set of gauges mounted on the steering wheel shaft cover, so it's
not easy to remove the gauge assembly, and get the parts I need before
opening it up further.
