[diesel_mercedes] Speedometer Cable Service

There's always a gear inside the tranny ~ the question was : can the center cable be removed without removing the bowden ? .

The easy way to find out is to disconnect the speedo cable at the speedo end and gently pull the center ~ it'll either slide out or not .

If it begins to slide out, STOP and go get the biggest garbage bag you can find ans tape it to the lower seat cushion so it'll prevent the incredibly nasty grimy cable lube from getting all over the seat and ruining the carpet .

There's a plastic gear inside the tail of the tranny.

I had to swap the tail on a used tranny, so the pic is the inside of that.

Thanks Mark. Can I just replace the inner cable, or do I have to replace both outer and inner. If just replacing the inner, is there a gear at the end inside the transmission?
