My auto shop teacher, Mr. Patee, told us premium gas should be run in all air-cooled engines.  He ran it in his CB750 (with Hondamatic(!)) and his Corvair.  This was the late '70s.

85-octane is perfectly acceptable at high altitudes for vehicles that require "regular" gas.  The thinner air means effectively lower compression.  With some exceptions, running premium gas up here is a waste of money.  87-octane works just fine.  I tried 85, 87 and 92 in the Porsche 944 I just sold.  The label on the fuel door said the car required 92-octane.  There didn't seem to be much difference in the way the car ran or in fuel economy between the three grades.  It ran cooler on the 92, though.

The owner's manual for my '84 Chevrolet K10 has a topographical map of North America showing the minimum octane required at various altitudes.  85 is displayed across the Rocky Mountains.  It seems to me that all gasolines today are of higher quality than the ox-piss sold in the '80s....

If ya want good gas, get some non alcohol super unleaded. I bet most in  places  you can probably find it. Its recommended for small engines and all two stroke.For 2 stroke, super runs cooler and for lawn mowers and stuff it lasts much longer sitting over the winter.I buy  it at a bulk plant. Max
