[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Overflow Valve

No pix yet but ;

I removed the pressure release valve that creates the IP's internal pressure of 15 # +/- , discovered it to be full of crud and the tiny delicate coil spring was worn out ~ bell mouthed where the ball bearing fits in one end and shiny almost paper thin about 1/2 way along it's side due to rubbing .

These are supposed to be checked periodically as the internal pressure is what fills the delivery valve elements .

When first I remove it I tried to blow through it by mouth , shouldn't be possible but I was able to , indicating low internal IP pressure .

I searched around until I found a spare used FOV and tested it , couldn't blow through it so I took it apart and found some very fine silty crud in it , wire brushed the exterior until it shone , then used aerosol brake leaner and Q-Tips to clean the inside , re assembled and was no longer able to blow though it so I installed it , bled the system (whew,took a long time)  , re started the engine and immediately noticed smoother idle and better throttle response off idle . This cleaning allows the mechanical fuel transfer pump to work harder and fill the IP's elements faster so the engine runs better and smoother with a *slight* power increase .

There's more to all this and as soon as I can figure out how to take close up photos , I'll re post with more details , this is an easy DIY thing anyone can do with two wrenches , 14 and 17 MM plus clean lint free rags and some time .                                                                                                                                                                                                     -Nate
