Actually the car was still functional with the old VR and once it was removed the brushes seem still in the usable range. The only clue that all was not well was when the headlights were on, the red panel light came on and strangely glowed brighter as the engine speed increased. It may have been failing electronics or bad connections, but the new VR seems to have solved the problem. This is on a 200,000 Mile 560 SEL that hasn't had any attention in this area for at least 5 yrs.

Probably have been a lot of alternators sold because of faulty VR's. I carry one in my trunk amongst other treasures - ever since I got trapped in Missouri for a $750 repair.
