Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Replacing the round air filter with a 'universal air filter.

I don't remember the size exactly, but I used approx 1/4" x 3/4" flat stock.  Since mine always seemed to break just past the mounting bolt hole on the rear leg, I ran the stock from roughly between the mounting holes to the back mount.  Leave enough metal forward of the bolt so that it supports the arm.  Extending it forward to pick up both mounting bolts would be even better.  A more elegant solution would be to replicate the whole bracket in thicker metal.  Due to the corrugations in the original stamping  you may have to bend the end of the arm up or down to align with the height of the original piece.  The distance provided by the rubber standoffs allows plenty of room.  You will need slightly longer mounting bolts.  If I remember correctly, I tack welded the piece to the original bracket, but that isn't really necessary.  The other 2 mounts provide enough location to keep the back piece from moving.  The only PITA is getting the hole for the back standoff in the right place.  It would be easy off the car, but I did it with the bracket in place.

Let us know what you do. We all are tired of the t-bracket and mounts failing which seems to be a design problem that no one ever fixed. There must be a Peach Tree or Mercedes Source solution to this routine failure (other than replace it every 2 or 3 years)
