RE: [diesel_mercedes] Off Road Fuels

Fuel dye in North America

In the United States of America, the Environmental Protection Agency mandates use of a red dye to identify high-sulfur fuels for off-road use. Solvent Red 26 is used in the United States as a standard, though it is often replaced with Solvent Red 164, which is similar to Solvent Red 26 but with longer alkyl chains. The Internal Revenue Service regulation 26 C.F.R. 48.4082-1 mandates use of the same red dyes, in fivefold concentration, for tax-exempt diesel fuels such as heating oil; their argument for the higher dye content is to allow detection even when diluted with "legal" fuel. Detection of red-dyed fuel in the fuel system of an on-road vehicle will incur substantial penalties.

Nope, not purple up here in the north, its red. But interestingly enough, way back in the early 70's I lived up in BC., Canada.  , and they had farm gas, purple gas, dyed gas, non taxed gas, off road gas. Anyone live in THE GREAT WHITE NORTH?, Is there still purple gas? Anyway I'm shocked there is off road diesel down there. What is it used for? I would never run red diesel in my car. But I use lots of it for my tractors and my generators. It says right on the pumps, "this stuff may damage your car", geez whiz, I would never want to damage my car. Thinking of starting one of my 240's soon, its snowed in but I thought it would be good to run it for a while. Heading to Cali. as soon as spring thaw sets in. My mom is 96, better go visit. max

Probably in LA no one has heard of off road diesel. In the country I think everyone uses it(but not me). Diesel has stayed very high priced, gasoline, even up here in the north country has dropped to $1.99. Enjoy it folks, we all know it wont last. In the winter of 2001 I got off road diesel delivered for $.76.9, I stored up on about 1000 gallons. Even now I'm going tru the last of my less than $2.00 diesel in my generator, its about 8 years old and seems to work fine. Last winter I was having starting problems so I dumped in two jugs of cetane booster and that seems to work very good. I will soon be out of all my old fuel. Max
