I just unscrew it and pump and screw it back in.

 

my problem was no fuel to the pump in the first place when the fuel was jelled. no fuel came out of the bleeder screw on the fuel filter when pumping with a manual pump.

I don't know about yours, but I always unscrew the white plastic top and pump it until pure fuel is flowing, and then screw the white plastic top down until it is finger tight. No fuss, no muss, no air bubbles either.
