It may not be your problem but look at the voltage regulator. It can be removed with the alternator in place! The biggest problem that I have found with the alternators is brush wear on the regulator. The best replacement is Bosh, but others will work as well. They are readily available online.

Changed the volt regulator and tightened belts.
Battery seems OK, yet maybe on the weaker side of OK.
The Glow plug relay seems to stay on too long at times.
It can't handle everything on: AC, radio, lights, without the radio
crackling at idle.
The cheapo alt/bat tester goes from not showing an alt at all, to weak
alt, to normal alt function.
I'm wondering if the Glow plug relay issues have weakened the battery.
Next step, replace the relay with an extra I have in the garage.
