Thanks for the info. I have the problem solved. When my Daughter years ago broke a key off in the ignition I removed the steering column. Its easier to work on it outside of the car.

I've got one to do, a friend's 85 300td. The cylinder won't turn at all.
Should be interesting with that hardened lock ring.
I'm thinking, drilling is the most likely solution, without damaging the dash. It needs a carbide bit though.
