After learning how to adjust the valves on my 300D, I never had that problem again.    just my 2 p

I am somewhat surprised that no one has developed a solodstate replacement for the mechanical relay timer used for the glow plugs. A variable time could be incorporated.

Depends on the temperature.  I also have a '79 300SD.  In all cases first start in the morning, I crank up the throttle control in the dash, wait for the glow plug light to go out, and crank it.  If below 30 degrees F, I pump the pedal once or twice before cranking.  If below 15 degrees F, I hold the throttle about half way.  Once it's below 20-25 degrees F, it's going to take a bit of cranking.  Below 5-10 degrees F, it could be a lot of cranking, like minute or so, continuous....

Once started for the day, it's pretty much just a twist of the key and off I go.  Unless it's gotten cold again.

Out of curiosity, how do you start our diesels? With my VW, I just crank after the glow plugs do their thing. No hitting of the throttle. PO told me to hit the throttle on my 1979 300SD.
