[diesel_mercedes] Regulator & Contact Points

It's called " Burnishing " and the special files are called Burnishing Files , they're much finer than 600 grit .

In a pinch I'd use 1,000 grit but never anything coarser than that , certainly not 600 grit .

I get E-Bay or Amazon still has Burnishing files , I have some that are 50 + years old and they work fine .

I remember the old cars with contact points in the distributor.  those contacts has a special hard coating on them.  Filing with something coarse would grind off that coating and they would stop working quickly.  A very fine piece of sandpaper (about 600 grit) like auto body shops use was best. I always kept a piece in my glove compartment..  ALWAYS wipe the points clean with a piece of cloth afterwards so grit will not keep contacts from making contact.  Electronics suppliers sold special files for contact points back in the day (very fine grit).
