OK, it's back together & now purrs like a kitten, or an old tractor...:)
There were a few PITA moments with the turbo, yet pretty straight forward if you follow the instructions.
I added a couple more pics.
Here's a video from Mercedes Source on turbos:

I used the Mercedes Source turbo rebuild kit.

The engine is now clean on one side, the manifolds are in along w/ the gutted CAT. I took apart this turbo, after making marks for later placement, and found gelled oil behind the impeller and throughout the housing, on the intake side, and built up carbon on the exhaust side, so obviously this turbo was leaking oil and needed a rebuild.
I'll put the turbo back together today and install.
I added some pics: engine, manifolds & CAT, turbo taken apart before cleaning intake & exhaust

Be thankful that you don't have the '85 CA 300D w/ the CAT, as that extra part in the system, between the exhaust manifold and the turbo, allows more chance of movement of all the parts. Last week I tried to tighten up the system, and found the exhaust down pipe had sheared off, so I had that repaired, and while trying to tighten up the turbo mount, broke a bolt off in the manifold, which didn't want to come out with the usual drilling and 'easy-outs'. The shaking seemed about the same as before, yet I heard more noise from under the hood, and when I started pulling the turbo et al, I found a broken turbo bracket, and then the EGR tube, and later the end of the CAT had sheared too. When everything was pulled, I noticed many of the supports were loose. Luckily, I do have another set of parts I pulled from a parts car years ago, as well as a federal setup from Brian's old engine. Unfortunatly, the federal system won't fit w/ the '85 CA, A/C hose routes, yet if there's issues in the future I may switch out the A/C and exhaust system to the standard federal setup. Since it's all apart, it makes since to rebuild the turbo before reinstalling. Anyway, I better get out there before the heat rolls in. Rob '85 300D CA Garden Grove, CA
