Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Tire O.D.
Could be ;
I approach Auto Repair and Service a bit differently than most .
Some tire catalogs still have this info , the Falcon catalog did but I couldn't find the ones with the OD I wanted .
If you're near a big place with lots of stock on hand , you can take along a tape measure....
All of my various vehicles are old and have smallish engines so large OD is important to me to get decent Highway speeds without over revving the engine .
I days gone by I'd mix and match the final drive ratio to get where i wanted to be , it turns out Mercedes kindly stamped the final drive ratio on the pumpkin's flange near the derby cover ~ I wonder how many priceless 2.88 pumpkins I walked right past , went to the crusher as no one ever checks or takes them out .
I check every single MG Midger / Austin Healy Sprite I find and wind up taking out about 1/2 the pumpkins I find as some have the hard to fond 3.90 ratio and one every few years I score a 3.72 , I run these in my personal LBC's .
When looking at radial tires , the middle # is the ' aspect ratio ' and what this means is : the higher this number , the taller the tire will be , larger OD .
I also like to run a fairly narrow tread ~ fat tires may look cool (?) but they cause more problems .
