I used the cheapo Harbor Feight Diesel Compression Tester , they had a more expen$ive one that listed Mercedes but as long as you have the correct threads (10 or 12 MM IIRC) you're good to go .
I'd adjust the valves first as they're _always_ tight and tight valves make for lower compression when the engine is otherwise in good shaPE .
