Here's the story....
We have ten dogs. We have them in two groups. The old timers that includes Lucky who has been with us since 2000 and is now 13, Sadie, Gabby, Bart and Zeke. They have been with us for 7yrs to 4yrs.
Then we have the new comers/puppies...Levi who is a year old now, his mom Glory, Bleu & Stephan. The boys are all about the same age and get along.
We had the "big" group out, the old timers, feeding, playing, walking. Kevin thought (thinking isn't knowing) he had them put away before he let out the next group.
Zeke, border collie has been with us since '08 had gone down to the creek or where ever. He came bounding up to be greeted by the others. He was a bit freaked out, the youngsters were all "hey let's play". They know each other through the fence, but not face to face for safety reasons.
Glory was supposed to be on her tie out. She saw Zeke and Levi so she rushed over to protect her son. Kevin and I both ran for her, we were on opposite sides. We both dove for her leash, both missed. She dove for Zeke, I had an immediate flash back to being bitten 33yrs ago so I threw my hands up and sort of fell backwards, not knowing as I did so it thrust my thigh forward, right into her mouth! It was done in a blink, but also slow motion! She knew what she did immediately and let go, but not before her top right canine was buried in my leg, her bottom left canine didn't go in as far, her tiny teeth in between didn't phase me, but did leave an imprint.
I rushed to the house to wash my leg with blue dawn then peroxide, not having a clue how deep it was. Kevin came in and I decided I could no longer stand on one leg, so we headed to the shower. Our peroxide has a squeeze top so he was really forcing it into the top hole where it filled a cavity to my knee and came out the bottom hole and forced raw chicken out that she had been eating seconds earlier. Once all the meat was out we stared at each other both asking "now what?" I didn't want to go but we headed to the local Ennis ER. After 30 minutes we heard someone else say they'd been there for 6 hours. Meanwhile they called in a woman with a toddler that had nothing wrong with him. He had been munching on soda and potato chips, running all over the place, crawling under and over the chairs. I said "I'm starved, we're leaving". We stopped at the grocery store for fresh raw garlic, one of the best natural antibiotics you can get and more peroxide.
I started a new job the next day so I toughed it out all week. I stayed on the raw garlic, peroxide (HUGE MISTAKE!!!) Olive Leaf, Oregano oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract...all antibiotic, antimicrobial, antibacterial. I also took Collidal silver and used it on the wound and used tea tree oil.
Last Sunday I was awakened at 4am with an indescribable pain. It felt like there was a hot knife in there and it was a constant pain, not throbbing.
That night, after I had dropped Kevin off at work I sat here at the PC wondering "what IS that smell" then it hit me!! Gangrene! Then it all flooded back, the pain, the smell, from my Brown Recluse Spider bite in '03.
I googled it, and after txting my sister and calling Kevin decided we were all too tired to deal with it that night, but I had made up my mind I was going to Methodist hospital first thing Monday morning. I stopped by work to tell them I was headed to the doctor right then. She was a bit po'd but tough. Kevin's brother told us not to go to "big" Methodist, it's in the "hood" and always busy but go down to Mansfield. I was happy we did. Within 30 mins I was in a room and hooked to IV antibiotics. I went through 2 bags of it over 6 hours. They threatened to keep me over night! They let me go with the promise that I would get the antibiotic prescription filled, if not I HAD to come back! My sister stepped up and paid for it and was reimbursed by St Vincent De Paul, who her husband works with. I had to go back on Wed, at which point they sucked out the infection which was from mid thigh to my knee. They packed it with antibiotic gauze and had me come back on Thurs when they repacked it, thankfully it didn't hold nearly as much! I just got back from my fourth visit and have to go back on Tues! I'm also on 1200 mg of one of the most potent antibiotics they could find. They were a bit freaked out by the depth of the bite and level of infection and wondered how it got so bad so fast. It was the peroxide!
The only thing I did wrong was the peroxide. It kills off the new skin cells!
Now the joke was on ME! Someone ratted me out animal control. They had been crawling all over the farm for two weeks. Cost me my entire tiny two week unemployment check to get a vet to do a farm visit to get everyone up to date on rabies vaccination. That was on Tues, I was bitten on Sunday! KARMA huh? She would have been quarantined, me given rabies shots!
I haven't slept but 3-4 hrs each night and it was fraught with unrest due to pain and pain meds, which I am no longer taking. The doc on Thurs explained why they weren't working anyhow, raw nerves inside. Store brand advil works better as it takes down the swelling and doesn't make me feel weird or give me weird dreams. Now that they packed it with antibiotic gauze it's amazing. ONE day and it was so much better. The doc I saw on Thur was freaked out by how much the doc got in there on Wed, but she wasn't able to get as much in, meaning it IS healing! She says the gauze is to help it heal faster and it takes up the space so the infection has no where to grow. The doc today didn't put in as much, wanting it to heal from the inside.
thanks for the prayers.
Time for a snack and a nap. HOT here! Been having to drive Kevin's F250. My car is still down. :( I'm actually supposed to be on here digging up an email from the list about switching the fuel filters and bleeding the injectors and if there is supposed to be any air! :)
Your dog bit you ? .
Or some mangy stray mutt ? .
