Good point.  It should also be remembered that, on the diesels, the vacuum does NOT come from the intake manifold, but from a special, vacuum pump mounted at the front of the engine, driven off the auxillary shaft.  These pumps CAN go bad....

That's a good procedure for tracing vacuum leaks, but not all vacuum reservoirs are in the trunk.  On at least one of m y '80's 300s, the reservoir is under the left front fender.
