Trust me, he may be a former Drill Sergent and I've heard the stories from back in the day, but for the most part his bark is worse than his bite. 

He's a total softie.  Truth be told most of the rescued animals here are HIS!  He has HIS cat that won't give me the time of day, but she sleeps snuggled up next to him. There's HIS dog that won't play fetch with me. Oh he'll go get the ball, but he runs off with it.  But can't get enough of bringing the ball back for Kevin.  When we raised rabbits for food it was ME that had to process them. He couldn't even get them out of the cage...but he loved the way they tasted when cooked!  When a doe would have too many or not be a good mom, he would get upset because I wouldn't go bottle feed them to "save" them.
