When all else fails - call Tom at the Classic Center and (or) spend a weeks vacation in the So. Cal. PAP yards (we have 15 - 20 of them from San Diego to Riverside).

I changed to quick glow plugs years ago. I just kept the old timer relay. I
just count to ten and start. Leave it on longer for cold days. Maybe 15
seconds. The relay is now coming on while the car is running(also sometimes
doesn't light at start & I have to hit the box under the dash to get it to turn
on) and that causes the alternator belt to slip and squeal. Sometimes I can rap
the box under the dash to stop it. Is there a plug in replacement for the relay
that works with the old 77 system but times out for the fast glow plugs? I know
what I'm doing isn't exactly the approved method but it's worked for years. Can
you replace a resistor or capacitor in the box to change the timeout? Also is it
possible I can take the box apart and clean the contacts and maybe replace a
spring or whatnot to rebuild it? Related to the squealing I have welded my
alternator bracket three times. I think it took this time but when it squeals I
have noticed it re-cracking. Can you still get these brackets? Lawrence
