Re: [diesel_mercedes] Unique FrankenBenz on eBay

The engine swap is a turn off for me - but I was turned off before I got there - when I saw the rust at the rear panels. Not much I would want off it.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Unique FrankenBenz on eBay

I've been a long-time lurker on this board, but I finally saw something that required a pithy comment or two. eBay auction 220756238976 features the most unusual Benz conversion I've yet encountered. Someone took a gray-market 200D, complete with Euro headlights, and swapped in the drive train (engine and 5-speed transmission) from an early 1980s Toyota Corolla.

Now, I'm quite fond of the Toyota 3TC engine, having run a rusty little Toyota equipped with one up to the 180,000 mile mark before selling it, still running fine, so I could dabble in VWs for a while. However, the idea of putting one in a vintage Benz just seems even more philosophically wrong than just about any other conversion I could imagine. The engine probably has more horsepower than the underbored 615 that it replaced, but still....

I'd love to hear what other people think of this particular project. I particularly liked the way the previous owner mounted the Toyota instrument cluster--under the glove compartment and well out of driver view.
