Actually, the 722.2 transmission as found in the W116 used BOTH mechanical AND vacuum. One (mechanical) was used for the timing of the shift, the other (vacuum) for the quality (i.e., hardness) of the shift.
The biggest difference between the turbo-diesel 123 and the 116 is the transmission. By the time the turbo engine found it's way into the 123, the 722.2 transmission (four-bolt oil pan, bellhousing separate from the case) was replaced by the 722.3 (six-bolt pan, bellhousing and case cast as one piece, flawed B2 servo piston). HOWEVER, because Trish's 123 was a non-turbo, the 116 turbo-diesel drivetrain with the early transmission is a near-perfect fit for her car. (Though, I suspect the later transmission could be bolted up to an earlier engine with little difficulty.) Outwardly, the turbo and non-turbo 722.2 (early) transmissions are nearly identical, aside from the vacuum modulator. Internally, the turbo engine's transmission received a wider rear band and clutch drum, with an extra friction/steel clutch pair, all to handle the added power of the turbo.
The possible differences between the drivetrains of the turbo-diesel 123 and 116 may be with the exhaust pipe coming out of the turbo, the location of the radiator hoses, and, possibly, maybe, the location of the A/C compressor (not sure when MB switched from the York compressor to the GM one on the 123). Oh, also the turbo-diesel 123's generally had EGR. The diesel 116's never had that.
And, of course, there's the added HORSEPOWER!

Trish,
The 116 is the predecessor to the 126 - bigger, longer, heavier than the 123.
For the turbo diesel drive train, the parts should be mostly interchangeable. May need different motor mounts and things. The transmission in the 126 uses vacuum modulation, while the 123 used a mechanical link. I expect, but I don't actually know, that the 116 is also mechanical, rather than vacuum.
Happy holidays, I'm burning up a bunch of kerosine to get out of Dodge for a couple of weeks.

OK we've got all the parts we need to put my 81 300D back on the road as a turbo.
Kevin wants to knows specifically in reference to the motor and trans, what is the difference between the 123 & 116 chassis's? We've been digging around online and look at them when we go to the pap's.
We already have the tail pipe piece we need since we know that hook up is different.
