Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: question about rot on fins and pontons

About 20 years ago, I had a '63 220SEb.  Fuel-injected, four-on-the-tree.  Black with black interior.  Ran and drove great, once I replaced the broken front coil spring.  It was pretty rusty, too, especially unusual for a car in Colorado, though it may not have originated from around here.  Most of the rust was in the front floorpans, where they met the unibody frame rails.  Had poorly done rust-repair in the rocker panels, and the rust there was re-rearing it's ugly head.  Some rust above the headlights.  Doors were solid.  Time may have dimmed some aspects of the car, but I remember it fondly.  I sold it to a ski-bum chick, who worked up in Keystone.

I have had to pontoon MB, a 180b and a 190b. Neither of those cars had any rust problem, but that was 20 years ago. Both cars came from Florida.

I also had a 220Sb that I bought in North Carolina and already had rust when I bought it. I have looked at several of these and I believe rust is a problem on the fin's models. Check carefully on the front fenders above the headlights. That is a bad area to trap road salt and mud and I have seen several with rust there. Also the rocker panels are a problem area on these cars, front to back. Great road car though, I would still have that one were it not for the rust.
