I know you are fond of the W123 diesels, I loved my 84 300CD, but have you considered one of the W124s? Prices appear to be about the same now (at least here in Northeast) as the remaining decent W123s are not going cheap and the W124s are more plentiful and coming down in price. I'm on my 2nd one, a 1991 300D with 277K. Fuel mileage is consistently closer to 30MPG, last tank of B20 came out at 30.13mpg on a run up to Boston and back. Even mixed driving it only drops to around 28-29mpg. repairs and parts are reasonable as well.
