Yes ;
_DO_NOT_BEGIN_TAKING_IT_APART_YET_ !!!!!
Wait until you have the new engine in hand so to speak , begin looking in the Greensheet , Thrifty Nickle , Craigslist , Recycler , Flea-Bay and Tractor Trader Et Al _now_ as they do pop up all the time , you just have to beat the bushes ~ if there's any Insurance Co. sites near you , find out how to check their weekly smasher auctions OnLine , same with the local Police Garage Towing Service . ideally you'll find one that a drunk had impounded so you'll know it prolly runs o.K. , also look at ALL the charity donation places , they get old Mercedes in constantly .
Get you dead one up on jack stands on cement , not asphalt or other death working area , scrootch underneath it and begin cleaning the tranny , count how many bolts hold the sheet metal pan on and clean it until you can read the serial & part # tag on it , I'm guessing it'll have a 722.XX tranny in it , if you match this and the tranny to engine linkages , the swap will go *much* easier....
Once you have a donor , before taking it apart , do a full tune up on it and ensure it actually runs well , you can swap out glow plugs , injectors etc. from the dead one , then drive it 'round the block on Sunday afternoon when Officer Not Overly Friendly isn't patrolling your 'hood , to make sure it not only runs , but does so well and shifts _three_ times , these are four speed slush boxes .
You have signed on for a lot of hard , dirty work but the end reward will be _REALLY_ satisfying , I know this .
Work in a clean area , sweep it well , get lotsa old milk crates or big cardboard boxes , drain oil gallon jugs etc. so you don't have to keep stopping as you go along . by the time you're finished you'll have a HUGE mess and piles of junk but persevere and DO NOT toss nor give away anything before the job is 100 % done to your satisfaction as minor things have a way of cropping up during the shakedown period and you'll be able to rummage the trunk or backseat of the dead car , piles full of greasy , rusty bent & mangled random parts...
Welcome to my world ! =8-) . once it's all done , load up the remains and offer for free/cheap locally , someone will want it all , if for no other reason than scrap value , unless you get paid lots , resist selling a few parts & getting stuck with the carcass .
Make them take it _ALL_ .
