If you have a compressor, you can use a venturi-type vacuum pump.  I've had pretty good success with one of these:

It is important to _NOT_ just add refrigerant @ home using a DIY kit as this will inject some moisture into the system and sooner or later this will _always_ come back to bite you , in a $erious way as the tiny bit of moisture corrodes the delicate aluminum of the condensor and evaporator as well as other parts .

DIY repairs & flushing out , compressor replacement etc. is fine & good but always take it to a shop and have it properly evacuated before re filling the system .
