The 300SDL is a fabulous car. Compared to the earlier, 5-cylinder engine, the 6-popper is more powerful and more fuel efficient.
Drawbacks are that it is less tolerant of fuel type and quality, and more susceptible to warped heads and blown head gaskets. (A hot re-torque of the head bolts would probably solve the head/head gasket problems.)
New parts are <maybe> more difficult to come by, but not anymore so's you'd notice. Used engine parts are definitely rarer, body parts are, of course, shared with the other W126-chassis cars. Parts prices are no higher.
If you find a well-cared for one at a good price, consider it. (Same advise applies to the 5-cylinder cars.)

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Newbie with purchase question
I am planing on buying two 1980's 300 turbo diesels. (One is for my wife.)
The plan is to use them as daily drivers, on waste oil, with a newer car as a backup vehicle.
There is a local 300SDL. Are parts much harder to find and more expensive than they are for the five cylinder cars?
thank you
Rodger
