Something's wrong here.
A 300TD is a wagon, not a 4 door. Do you mean 300D turbo sedan?
Misdescription of a 123 platform car should not affect the hood spring issue, however.
If you put the hood all the way up, 90 degrees, pointing straight at the sky, the end of the spring on the hood should be lose and easily manipulated. The spring only develops tension when the hood is in the angled up position. That's why they have the little locking levers on the hinge, to hold the hood in the upright position, since there' no spring tension.
These springs have some muscle in them. You don't want to be trying to manipulate them with vice grips and having them slip and catch a finger. Remember that this is good German engineering. You put the hood in the right position, it should be easy to work on - generally, put any part on these cars in the right position and it is easier to work on.
