I just went through a similar scenario.
A beautiful, clean 240D auto, with a blown engine....
I ended up buying a crashed, but really good engine, 300D, and, putting the
engine/trans in my 240.
Pretty clean swap. I could also have put just the engine in, except, they
had different kickdown mechanisms (vacuum=-mechanical).
It would seem you could do the standard tests on your parts engine:
compression, cold starting, oil cap dance, smoke, and color of same, at cold
start and warm revs.
Does the parts car start? Of course, that'd be critical to testing.....
Just a few random thoughts.
