I would venture to say that a lot of solid build up in black tanks has a lot to do with which side of the coach the toilet is on. On our 98 Dip, the toilet was on the drivers side of the coach which means the botton of the black tank just under the toilet is closer to the drain opening. Therefore any liquid in the tank has to help wash the solids out of the tank better than if the toilet is on the passenger side. On our 04 Windsor the toilet is on the passenger side so solids tend to collect more on the bottom of the tank because not enough liquid is available to wash them out across the length of the tank. Even with using the tank flusher, I still have solids remaining, especially when we park for a long time. I have had to run a water hose down the toilet several times to stir up the solids. I have used most all the brands of holding tank chemicals and none of them were better than the other in disolving the solids. I have found that Rid-X is the best and the
cheapest for odor control. Chuck B

Still, many, many of us Monaco owners use Rid X and have no odor or
clogging. And, when you dump the tank, there is still a colony of bacteria left.
I would also note that I am starting to get handouts at some campgrounds
that if you have any formaldehyde based chemicals in your tank, that you should
not dump. (This is always "blamed" on the local sewage treatment facility's
rules.)

Rid X says on their website that they haven't tested it for RV

Bacteria are the way to go if you are going to use anything...but Rid
X isn't designed for holding tanks.
One difference is that in some climates our holding tank water gets
much hotter or much colder than water in a septic system which is
underground far enough to be a nice even temp most of the time. They
say some of the RV bacteria products use critters that can survive and
work in high temps in particular.
Rid-X has to be better, anyway, than formaldehyde or the so-called
naturals that release formaldehyde even though they say formaldehyde
free. Like.. bronopol (Thetfd natural) or the stuff in TST green --
both produce formaldehyde. I'm a science freak who gets her jollies I
looking up what is in the stuff on the shelves since they all look
alike in the store.
Odorlos is a nitrate which is a fertilizer and I do not understand how
it works, but it did seem to do a pretty good job on odors, but it
didn't seem to do a good job on helping to clean out our tank or keep
our gages clean. Plus I figured waste should already have plenty of
nitrate in it and we don;t need more to find its way into streams or
ground water if the parks dump station has any leaks.....
Borax can be useful, but if you have pets or grandkids around, keep it
locked up and hard to find. I believe a quarter ounce or less can
kill a pet or a small child and that isn't much!
We have used another Wal-Mart product called RVTec100 for years
whenever we can get it. Costs about $4.50 a bottle and goes a long
way. Good odor eaters from our experience and leaves the tank and
gages pretty clean. Love that price!
