When you consider the alternative the 53 grand was a real bargain. Remember
it's only money.
You were blessed with the proper "Mechanics" and facilities at the right
time and place.
Stay Well we enjoy your posts.

Hi Russ,
I know what you are talking about.. There are many things that I can no
longer do.Spinal Stenosis as well as Arthritis. Of course we should be glad
that we are able to do what we can. You think your mechanic charged a lot??
The Sunday before Thanksgiving I started to hemorrhage. A trip to the
emergency room. Surgery on Monday and I got out Wed. Afternoon. Not counting
the doctors charges the hospital bill alone was $53,000. Old age is not
golden.

Ron,
Yes, My coach is a rear radiator, the only thing I would change if I could,
put it on
the side to make the engine more accessible. But he had to replace two
thermostats. I
checked on my engine, yes, there are two side by side and the thermostat
housing. The
housing the t-stats are in, has the bolt attachments for the belt tensioner.
So it was not
just the belts he was replacing. Still, to charge for something that had to
be R & R'd,
anyway because they were new is, to me, not really business like. His shop
does charge
$70 per hour, which is a great rate, so I guess he needs to profit somewhere
I just had a Ford AOD trans rebuilt in my '88 Squire wagon for $750. This
included R
& R also. Some people out there still do good work for a fair price.
The worst part of this whole thing is that 10 years ago I would have done
all this my
self. To have to step back and say "I cannot do that anymore" is the hardest
thing. My
arthritis is taking over my life, unwillingly to me, and I must admit there
are some
things I cannot do anymore. Still, I am attempting to build another street
rod.

: Russ, I am with you, even with a rear radiator,$700.00 for belt
: replacement is way too high! 5 years ago when I retired (Had my own
: transmission shop)I was rebuilding rear drive transmissions for that
: kind of money!! and as far as using flat rate, that's not the
: problem ,flat rate protects you from greedy shops that otherwise
: would charge whatever rate they choose. If you are a tech that is
: worth $100.00 an hour, which there is when it come to some very
: technical repairs, why are you out there replacing belts and oil
: changes? It's like Paying the guy that washes your car the same as
: the guy who rebuilt your engine or trans ! just my thoughts Ron ---
