Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 300D front calipers

They usually break out the brand but there seems to be some confusion as to the application of a specific caliper. I've used ATE and Bosch.  Its probably good to use the same brand on each side.  What I can't figure out is if there is a difference in the calipers and if so, why it isn't it spelled out.  There must be some difference given the 2 different rotor diameters and the fact that I got a set that rubbed on the hub.  It has to be said that there isn't much clearance in any case between the caliper and the rim.

Mostly this is due to multiple different suppliers but also the taxis could be ordered with the larger brakes .

If you look on RockAuto.com they'll usually break out the different brands , ATE , Girling , Bendix etc. .....

Most of them interchange , good thing you had what you needed to  make it work .

I was operating on the apparently mistaken impression that most 80-85 123 cars had identical front suspension and brake components.  I ordered a set of front calipers for an '84 300D.  When I got them they looked comparable to what was coming off, but after installation the calipers rubbed on the hub.  When I talked to Cardone's technical support staff they said that they had only 1 pair of part numbers for all of the variations including the 240D.  I confirmed this general practice with the listings on several other sites offering rebuilt calipers. Since the 240D's and some early 300D's use 278MM dia rotors and the later 300s use 284MM rotors this seemed strange.  I had already successfully fitted 300SD calipers to the car on an emergency basis.  Since I  was reluctant to go through another lengthy and expensive caliper swap, not being sure of what I would get, I installed a set of 300SD 284 MM vented rotors and matching calipers that I had in stock.  The interesting thing was that the wheel bearings were not interchangeable between the 300D and SD.  Can anyone shed any light on this problem.

So ;

What brand regulator did you use ? .

FWIW ; some years / models it's dead easy to change out , others like you mentioned you have to loosen it and move it into gain access .

so, I finally got time to change the voltage regulator because while it LOOKS LIKE you can change it without at least loosening the alternator, you definitely can't. or I couldn't anyway. thankfully, I was able to loosen it enough to get to the VR without taking the whole thing off.

up until this point, I was using the cigarette lighter thing to see where the battery was at. around 12 volts with the car idling, would go up to around 13.6 during acceleration/normal driving, but never above that. I sprayed some WD40 on it (because that worked nicely with mine) and got it to go up to 14 once, but definitely needed new regulator as you can see by the picture.

so now, I'm going to put it back together and hope we're good.
