The 126 has a dual firewall?!  The 116 does NOT.

I can tell you from having owned both a 116 and an early 123 (and having to remove the transmissions from each) that there is vastly more space between the engine and the firewall/transmission tunnel in the 116 than in the 123....

    The 126 has a dual firewall, much better sealed than the 123.  But the '80 SD is a 116, and I am unsure whether it had the dual firewall.  It was longer than your 123, so there was space there, maybe that extra length is what's flumoxing you with the transmission rod.  Maybe you need to find one from a 123 D (turbo) instead of the one from the 116.
