[diesel_mercedes] Open Highway Fuel Economy

I have these variations on our '82 240D too ~ we drive it to Las vegas and back on a fairly routine basis , as it's clapped out I don't exceed 65 MPH but I nearly always run the AC flat out .

One time , it'll be 28 MPG . the next , 32 . once in a while , it jumps way up to 36 MPG's .

Maybe it's the additives I use sporadically ? .

Two things :

One he says it didn't when I'm pretty sure it did and two :

The high fuel mileage was only on our long trips when Tom drives as he's a lot slower driver than I do...

Considering Tom's W-126 isthe size & heft of a _BUICK_ , I'm thinking 27 MPG is pretty good ! .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Milage Check 1984 300CD Auto W/ AC

I've been commenting on that same premise, for quite some time.
I make the same drive, same car, same weather, year after year, from here to
Packwood, WA.
I've noted a drop in fuel economy, with all factors being exactly the same,
over a long period of time. Many, many trips.
I did also note, one of the reasons for my loss of economy, was, a loose
pre-chamber collar.
When that was fixed, I got back close to 30 mpg, where it had dropped to 28
or so.
But, it used to get 30-32.
I've kept good records, and have many trips, to average over different time
periods.
And, my car, in the last 10 years I've owned it, has gone from 185K to 240 K
in mileage, so, "wear" should not be a real factor, as far as changing
conditions.

by the way: '86 300 sdl.

To me, it started when "they" began reducing the sulfur content of
diesel......and, in winter, the "winterized" diesel, seems different, too,
when I got it.

On a round trip from Portland to Seattle I used to break 31 mpg with no problem (83 240D).  This month I only got about 29 mpg.  Anybody think there is less energy in our diesel that in the past??  Can't think of any other variations.

I commented on this a few days ago.  The 300SD, fully loaded (tool boxes, bodies, suitcases, road food, etc.) has broken 32 mpg on long highway trips, even with AC running.  I do not believe it has ever broken 33 mpg.

Nate's comment about 32-36 mpg was just faulty memory.
