Re: [diesel_mercedes] glow plug relay fuse

The original fuses are dirt cheap as I recall (I bought 4 or 5 just to keep around). I would certainly get more, or carry additional lamp cord, while you are refining your "make do" survival gear.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] glow plug relay fuse

Out of the blue, my glow plugs stopped working and the light on the dash stopped lighting. I pulled the cover from the glow plug relay and found the 50A fuse blown. No big deal, I went to Advance and bought another 50A that I thought looked like the one blown. It was not, slightly to big and holes in the wrong place.

Perhaps with a rat tale file I can make this thing work, but in the mean time I have used a few strands of copper wire from lamp cord to bridge the connection. First time out, I did not have enough strands to bridge the current flow, but adding a few more strands and it works like a charm.

Should I continue with the modification to the off the shelf 50A or should I get the right one from ??????

And then, of course, there is the question of why my original fuse blew to start with.

The lamp cord strands are working great, and the car seems to crank quickly as usual.

I'll appreciate any perspectives from the group.

I'd try starting it in Neutral; may be the lockout switch.

Mary was verily dripping a steady flow of trans fluid yesterday. Was hoping for a loose bolt which could be tightened. But, no it was a leak from on high so Mary is getting a new pump seal. Problem solved.

But, this morning Martha was deader that a doornail. Brand new battery checks out strong, headlights and lights on dash are good, but turn the key = nothing (no click, no nuthin). It was sudden - no warning.

So anyone got some good advice?

OK I got brave and measured the circuit at LA on the connector.  I tested this
by using resistance.  My meter showed 253 ohms to ground from LA.  Good chance
it was a bulb.  I put 12v there with a wire from the + battery & the Glow
indicator lights.  So now all I have to do is connect it to the ground side of
my momentary switch(if you connect to the positive side you will have trouble if
it activates the relay) and it should light when I activate the relay letting me
know I have 12v and everything is working.  If the light stops or doesn't light
I know I have a problem which may be the 50amp resetting relay which I may have
to increase by 10 amps.  Maybe.  My modification is almost done.  Again I think
this is superior to stock since this model has a 30 second relay which is not
available in 10 second & I have the fast glow plugs installed.  This is very
similar to a Perkins or other marine diesel starting configuration.  You hold
down the button for a set period of time and then start your engine.  Works for
me.  Lawrence Rhodes....

I'm doing exactly that but I'm not sure if the bulb in the dash is connected or
not.  If it is hot all the time, grounded all the time or floating.  These are
the three possibilities.  If someone knows for sure let me know.  I guess I
could poke around with my multimeter.  Lawrence Rhodes.....

Check the very last picture - not the diagram I saw, but it works.

Alan, what does inside the cowl mean? My next step is do take off the screens under the wipers, and look there. Is this the right approach?

I'm not sure myself, I do seem to remember some previous listing of that as a possible leak source.  I'd pull the grills look for obvious probems like rust or possibly blocked drains.  If the car is dry inside now you could try pouring some water into the area and see what happens.  Perhaps somebody else can provide more detailed information.  When you have an open grid at the top, there has to be some way to deal with the water coming in.
