Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Glow Plug Replacement

Sid,

I am a Ford fan.  I was pleased to find Autolites.  But, on this group, the consensus is that Autolites are bad.  My experience was negative, but that may be my engine's fault.

I would not use a brass brush to clean the plug hole.  The brush may break loss chunks of carbon and leave them in the engine.  I think that might damage your engine.  (Note - this is just my paranoia.   I have not tried it and had a problem.)

If you do use the brush, I would fill it with Vaseline to catch the carbon chunks.

There are reamers made for this.  They are pricey, but I plan to get one.

The manual that Nate was referring to is the owner's manual.  The MB one is more informative than most are.  Even if you have the repair manual, you also need the Owner's Manual.

I had good luck buying manuals on Ebay.  To make sure you are getting the right ones, find the model numbers for your car and your engine.  Yes, there are two.

One of the parts vendors has a good reference of the numbers.  It might be DieselGiant.  Unfortunately, I can't remember which one.  Maybe somebody will have an idea.

It is not my daily driver. There is still salt on the roads here, and this car has no rust. A real rarity in Western NY, for an '85 vehicle. I bought it in N. Carolina. It has 267K on the clock, and it was stopped there when I got it. The speedo still works, so what the heck.
I have tried to find some sort of manual for the car, but haven't had any luck. I kinda gave up on the idea, but would still like to get one.
I guess I will order the Monarchs, I had a bad feeling abut the Autolites. I just have never been a Ford guy.
I know it will be a thrill, getting the new plugs in, but I used to work on Phantom F4s once upon a time. I will just look upon it as a challenge. I was thinking of how it was worse than getting a root canal just getting them out!
I am going to ream the ports out with a .30 cal wire brush , but I am unsure on just how I am going to spin it on #5. Maybe I can do something like a starter-rope and spin it that way.
I am not pressed for time, so if I get mad, I will go have a coffee or whatever, give it a rest. It must have taken me almost 3 hours to get them out, but much of that was walking back and forth for different tools, chopping off a deep-well socket, things like that.
If anyone can tell me where to pick up a manual, I would appreciate it.
So, those Monarchs, on E-bay. $2.50 shipping, I think it was. $12.99 each? Maybe it was 11.99..... better than paying $10.00 each for autolites.
Thanks for the help.

[diesel_mercedes] glow plugs

[diesel_mercedes] Re: What are they worth? (ballpark)

I can give you my input on one of them.  I bought a 1991 300D 18 months ago with 272K miles. Everything (all windows, locks, guages, lights, sunroof, A/C etc.) works. I've only had to do normal maintenace (filters, fluids, etc.) and now have 186K+ miles on it. It starts first time-every time even down to 10*F and gets up to 33+MPG on my longer drives, 28-30MPG as a daily driver around town.  I paid $3200 for it and I feel it was a good deal.  I'd pay about the same for another one in similar condition.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Silvia '84 300SD - ...mileage check - livin' the dream.. 290K mi / 28-MPG

I can hear the ear splitting roar and smell the nitro hanging heavy in the air as the 2013 Winternationals begin one more time. Just too lazy to wander 1 mile and pay the $$ to see them.  Spoiled because we used to watch them for free through the fence. Boo for capitalism.

as I stood in yet another boarding line last week from yet another airport, I heard the gate agent ask the man in front of me "how are you sir?". He replied - "just livin' the dream maam, livin' the dream..." She looked at his ticket and said with a smile, with a name like his, he must be....his name? As I looked at the ticket stub in her hand, he was in fact, Mr. Right. I've started answering the same when asked how I am by the travel industry :^)

After nearly 7 weeks down for no good reason other than paranoid caution after some erroneous advice and wanting to get to 300K+ mi on this legendary engine - she's back on the road w/ valves set by someone who conservatively has adjusted 10,000 of same, at my residence no less with my brother looking in attendance and watching every move of the magic hands and trusty wrenches for future use - and got nearly 28mpg at 50 MPH avg for 300 mi between Littleton, MA and Hanover, NH in about 4" of frozen slush and mashed potato snow - a blend of local winter diesel + Diesel Kleen + Startron + MMO....that was the 2nd tank after I burned off the 2 month old remainder from when she was parked in Dec. Fuel filters still clean from the last tune up.

The one consequence of the valve adjustment being that the EGR vacuum plumbing came loose as the plastic nipples had become brittle and snapped at the base of the plug in the manifold - discovered when the car refused to shut off after taking the key out.... :^) Said plumbing has been, ahem, dealt with based on some sage advice about (re-) introducing as little carbon into one's engine as possible - and making the valve cover area look ever so much neater.

In the last 5 days I've been all over heck and creation from Hanover into Boston to Cambridge, Andover, Boston World Trade center - with the streets and weather in the worst possible conditions. This German taxi plods on through the day and the night in warmth, comfort and safety - avg mpg over last 800 mi overall 25.5.

Cheers and don't believe the hype, just live the dream :^)

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Hand Primer Pumps

O.K. , here's a couple pix :

# 1 is the original and best typ : Flea-Bay Item 130852356519 this is a side view (sorry) and this one needs to have thw white plastic wheel on top unscrewed until it clicks before you begin pumping it up and down to prime the injectors , after 30 + strokes you *MUST* turn the plastic handle clockwise to close and lock it again or it'll soon fail & strand you .

This is the later blck typ , Flea-Bay Item 330866740152 ~ this later model hand primer pump is spring loaded and sealed , you just press it down about 50 times to prime the injectors , no need to turn anything *but* it takes much more pumping to do the job , not a good thing IMO .

I hope these help you Sid .

I smell charred swine flesh and so must go now =8-) .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Glow Plug Replacement

2/16/201

Sorry for the late reply Sid ;

I'm out of town to see my ailing Mother . Internet access troubles too .

Anyway , this is where you need to stop and go buy an Owner's Booklet for any OM617 equipped Mercedes as it contains _vital_ information on how to prime the fuel sysem in case you either run out of fuel , or open the system for repairs , or if one of those pesky tiny injector return hoses dries out and begins leaking or falls off as you're happily motoring along far from home....

The NAPA guy is dead wrong , he can order in one or a thousand glow plugs , try a different salesperson .

I'm to far from my catalogs to be of help here but *you* can go to NAPA's pretty good OnLine Catalogs and see what they offer ....

Peach Parts , MBPartsdot somethingoranother all will have the correct glow plugs too .

I hope this isn't your daily driver as it might be down a while whilst you get these replaced , not a chance you'll ever get it re started until you learn the wheres and hows of the hand primer pump as changing the glowplugs without removing the injector pipes requires pixie sized hands...

When we get back to L.A. I have to replace the injectors in Tom's SD , maybe he'll take pix as I do it and we can make up a tutorial .

The hand primer pump is on the left lower front of the injector pump , look for the two fuel lines coming from the back of the car , one leads to a plastic intake screen and thence to the primer pump ~ it may have a white (prolly grimy) plastic wheel on the top with a knurled edge so it's easy to unscrew or it may have a round shouldered black push thing on it's upper end , both work similar but differently...

More in a bit if you wish .
