[diesel_mercedes] Heater Blower Repair

Dang cheap German cars ! you'd think being in the land of cold & snow , they'd build a decent heater but Nooooooooo ~ after only 28 years and 281,000 miles , the brushes wore out and it stopped working =8-^ .

I ordered up new brushes from Kent Bergma @ Mercedes Source in Bellingham , Wa , removed it and began the fun ~ as this car had been completely filled with dense choking clouds of Diesel smoke (oops) , it was pretty nasty in there , I took some pictures of the cleaning and repairs , Tom was busy to - day so I didn't get pix of the important difficult bits but I will when we overhaul his fan motor , I have a lead on affordable brushes working now , IIRC Kent gets $9 , not bad but being able to get them locally would be nice .

Sadly the commutator on my motor's armature wore at an 4° angle and I thought it beyond salvage but it works just fine and the new brushes should wear in fairly soon .

Most of the work was the cleaning ~ whew ~ that took patience and diligence but was worth the effort ~ electrical devices don't like heat and dust covering everything is a dandy insulator .

The commutator end bushing is the self aligning typ ~ a very nice touch , I put three drops of oil on it but it may well be designed to run dry , I can't tell but it spins freer now .

[diesel_mercedes] Fan Motor Repair

Dangit ! .

I had a long detailed message about fixing my fan motor to - day but the 'puter ate it =8-( .

I have fat fingers and occasionally press the wrong key and loose messages .

Anyway , it's DIY Do-able , I got some pix but not all I needed / wanted , there's a few tips Kent's How - To Booklet doesn't cover and I want to make a tutorial , when Tom brings me his dead fan motor I'll have him take more pix and create an album .

It's nice to have the fan again , even with no AC or heat on , I like a strong breeze of fresh air all the time and opening the window is too noisy .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Junkyard FUN !

Rotten leaves & walnut shells ~ I guess they left a window open in a car port or open garage....

It's been a while since your last report , how's it coming along ? .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Junkyard FUN !

Two things - a) The empty row in Ontario PAP was filled with non 123's, lots of Volvo's, couple of 126 gassers. b) They have installed a computer database near the entry where (supposedly) they can punch in the part you are looking for, and see if they have such a part in the yard. Allegedly this same database system will be in Monrovia and other yards owned by this "PAP."  I went and looked anyway, but on the way out I gave him my specs, i.e., "turbocharger for a 1983 MB 300d" as I did not see any w123 300d's. The mystical database pulled up an "option" which was a 1981 116 300SD turbocharger. I have not cross checked to see if they interchange, but if they do then this database could be useful.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Junkyard FUN !

Yesterday Tom came by after work and we went off to my favorite local Self - Service Junkyard as I desperately needed the walking exercise and his SD needs glow plugs (yes , we're poor White Trash who use used hard parts , get over it) ~ I quickly found a _RUST_FREE_ 1979 300SD that still has the European headlights in it , it also had some very new glow plugs and injectors , too bad I didn't have my injector socket .

Then Tom found a complete AS-NEW toolkit in the rtrunk of a W-126 560SEL I'd walked past as I never find any dang tools =8-^ .

He also found the remains of a very nice cobalt bule 1980 300CD , there wasn't much left as this car was clean and shiny , I did manage to get the new taillight lenses off it for a wopping $ 27.98 the paur .

I also found a 1979 W-123 240D with the hard to find black matte finish panel around the gearshift lever , that cost me $4.99 .

It'll soon be cleaned up to look new and join the matching dashboard switches cover on SWMBO's '82 240D as the wood in it is beginning to die and it's easier , cheaper and IMO _better_ to have the black covers as they never wear out unless you break them .

Apparently the Pick-A-Part Corporation was just sold to some outfit in Chicago called LKQ , the P-A-P Employees told me they're being treated well .

Tom got a perfect saftey triangle for $1.00 wow .

After we left , we stopped in a local gas station with good cement and passable lighting , I took my hear blower motor out of the car and part way apart , the brushes are dead worn away to nothing and the armature doesn't spin freely ~ now I guess I know whay the heater alwaysdragged down the charge voltage so much .

I'll soon clean it up and open it up , try to lubricate the bushings and replace the brushes with new ones from Mercedes Source in Bellingham , Wa.

The brushes are soldered into place and the leads should be carefully routed so they can't touch the edge of the whizzing commutator , Fritz apparently wasn't feeling too good in 1984 when they built my Coupe as the braided brush lead has rubbed against the commutator and wore part way through , it's a good thing I'm fixing it .

After washing up in the squeaky clean rest room , I changed my shirt and we went off to a nice dinner @ The Souplantation .
